“I wish I
didn’t have to be the boss all
of the time,” she whispered. She
had to get her mind on something
else, something to remind her
she didn’t always have to be the
boss, the ‘tough one’. She let
her mind drift, her body
relaxing. She shifted her
thoughts from the men she lived
with to a man she had met at
Joe’s tonight.
Drake.
Dangerous and gorgeous, unlike
any man she had ever met. He
epitomized the kind of man your
momma always told you to stay
away from. Black leather, spiked
hair and when he smiled, which
he did often, he had the fangs
of a vampire.
The first
time he’d flashed his dangerous
smile, Grace had felt an
electric jolt course all the way
through her down to her toes.
What would possess someone to
wear fake vampire teeth when it
wasn’t Halloween? Somehow it
intrigued her.
He looked
like ‘big city’ and was most
definitely the ornery type. What
had brought him to Roan County,
way down here in Kentucky in the
middle of nowhere? He’d asked a
lot of questions about the old
mine. How long ago it had been
abandoned, how to get there. If
anyone had gone missing there
recently. The sort of questions
a cop would ask. But he
definitely didn’t look like any
cop she knew.
Was he
undercover? She didn’t think so.
If someone was working
undercover here in the county,
she would have been informed.
And she hadn’t let on that she
was the sheriff, either, so he
couldn’t have known he was
talking to the local law
enforcement.
Drake had
given her the impression he was
here in Roan County for a reason
but what reason she couldn’t
figure out. He’d also let her
know with the way he acted
toward her he was interested in
her…as a woman. She’d left the
bar alone but had the feeling
she didn’t have to. It had taken
everything she had not to ask
where he was staying. Going back
to a motel with him would have
been so easy. The only thing
that kept her from it was the
fact she was the sheriff. She
didn’t need to give anyone any
fuel to use against her. Hard
enough being a woman in the
Sheriff’s office. The last thing
she needed was to be seen going
into a motel with a man like
Drake. The gossip would fly.
She
couldn’t deny her attraction to
him though. Odd. It wasn’t like
her to be instantly attracted to
a man, but this one…there was
such a mystery about him. Grace
loved a mystery. She wondered if
she could solve Drake. Grace
pegged him as a ‘Goth’ type, not
Roan County material at all. She
would bet her last dollar no one
was his boss. She’d bet he
called all the shots. She
wondered if he would be capable
of controlling…her.
